As early as 1953, DHU had established Department of Management Engineering, gathering China’s first generation of experts in management including Professor Shiqiu Zhou, Doctor of Public Administration, Harvard University, Professor Qichun Zhang and Ying Tang, Doctor of former Soviet Union. In 1959, Donghua University set up the undergraduate program in industrial engineering and management and began to enroll postgraduates in 1979. In September 1983, it launched the first cohort of the master’s degree program in industrial engineering and management. In December 1983, it set up the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, which was expanded into School of Economics and Management in 1993. One year later, the Glorious Sun School of Business and Management (GSSBM) came to birth after being sponsored by Glorious Sun Enterprise Limited (GSE) with HK$ 11 million. Professor Wuwei Li, Vice Chair of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and famous economist, serves as the honorary dean. The major milestones of GSSBM’’s development are shown in Table 2-1.
GSSBM has 135 faculties and staffs, among which 28 professors and 56 associate professors. There are 2,178 undergraduates, 752 master graduates and 80 doctoral students.
The School of Business and Management is located in Yan’ an Road Campus of Donghua University, with more than 8,000m2 of building office and 3,200m2 of laboratory and research base. The school has an Economic Management Library with an area of more than 800m2, more than 20,000 of Chinese and foreign books, more than 200 kinds of Chinese and foreign journals and newspaper, and the access to various electronic information sources through the Campus Network and Internet.
GSSBM is located in the Yan’an Road Campus of Donghua University, with an office building area of over 8,000 square meters and laboratories and research centers of 3,200 square meters. The School has an Economic Management Library covering a construction area of 800 square meters and collecting more than 20,000 Chinese and foreign languages books and over 200 Chinese and foreign journals or newspapers. Besides, the library offers a variety of electronic information resources accessible with the campus network and Internet.
Donghua University became one of the pilot universities of Master of Business Administration (MBA) of China in 1996. After 24 years of development, the MBA programs of Donghua University have been highly recognized by all sectors of the society and world-class experts and institutions. In 2001, the MBA programs of Donghua University were rated 5th in terms of total scoring in the evaluation of the second round of MBA academic institutions organized by the National Supervisory Committee on MBA Education, with teaching administration ranking the first and instructional organization ranking the third. In 2017, GSSBM has officially received accreditation from AMBA (The Association of MBAs), which demonstrates an important milestone of its development. In 2021, the MBA programs won the silver award for 2021 AMBA&BGA Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative.
Donghua University became one of the pilot universities of Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) of China in 2009, making it the only textile university in China with the authority to grant an EMBA degree. Under the leadership of the honorary dean Wuwei Li, known as the Vice Chair of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, famous economist and the father of China's creative industry, GSSBM EMBA has been aiming for an EMBA degree education featuring “creative and change management” by taking advantage of its over 60 years of accumulated management and educational resources and constantly expanding international doctoral supervisor network and calling together world-renowned experts, scholars and industrialists in the textile, clothing, economy, management, culture and other fields.
At present, GSSBM is committed to cultivating business-management elites with global perspectives and competitiveness. So far, GSSBM has been working actively to promote the international strategy and has established close and long-term cooperation and partnership with over 100 well-known domestic and overseas universities, research institutions and enterprises in the United States, Canada, Britain, Australia, as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan. Thus, the students are offered rare opportunities for international education experience.
